my best works tend to come from a process of starting a painting with little or no preconception of what will emerge and continuing until it’s “right”. What this rightness is I struggle to understand. But I know it when I see it. Just as I know “wrong” when I see it. Sometimes the rightness is not immediately obvious but comes with time. This happens when I reach a point when adding more to a piece seems to make it worse, but I’m not clear if rightness has been achieved. I assume rightness is subjective, but this also suggests that it is temporal. I’m fascinated by this idea of rightness, which seems intrinsic to the process of creation. What the hell it actually is is a mystery to me.
