Reclamation

some bits of a used pallet nailed together. Somehow closer to tree that many other representations of wood. Wood, particularly rough, “low quality” wood as is used to make pallets, is such a tactile material. It’s imperfections and chaotic textures give plenty of guidance and inspiration. You need to knock them back a bit, otherwise anyone handling it will be a pin-cushion of splinters. But the texture is the charm, and holes and knots are features. It’s hard not to project a landscape onto a surface like this, but that wasn’t my intention. The wood does suggest the land, or at least something organic. Something dynamic and changing. Wood is also porous. It soaks up the pigment and yields its own medium and character. I spent years trying to coax interesting, chaotic, organic texture from canvas, when I should have just gone straight to source. Nature provides.
