excavation

I sometimes think of my work as excavation, because it frequently requires removing what’s there, rather than adding things, which is the way most paintings work. Perhaps this is akin to sculpture too, but excavation feels more appropriate since I don’t really know what I’m going to find and there’s a sense of anticipation. I’m not steering the process, it is steering me. I’m am not creating ,I am discovering. It’s exciting, exhilarating.
