Creative collaborations

Work made to a brief, usually for a particular place. With a person, a business, or another artist. Not a portrait.

What that can mean

  • Sets of linked pieces - two, four, or a whole wall
  • Work sized, toned and coloured to a specific room
  • Panel pieces, or painting onto prepared board
  • Making alongside another artist, a designer or an architect
  • Work for a business, a venue, or a project rather than a home

How it works

  1. We talk about the space, the budget and the deadline.
  2. I visit, or work from photographs, and put together a written proposal with visuals and a price.
  3. We agree the set, the sizes and the palette before anything is started.
  4. I make the work in stages and send progress photographs as I go.
  5. Delivery or installation, arranged to suit the room.

Everything is quoted per project, because the price depends on how many pieces, how big, and how long. A deposit secures the slot and the rest is paid before delivery.

Three briefs

A stairwell with a 1920s feel

The brief was a stairwell with a Gatsby-era feel, built from faces out of classic cinema - Louise Brooks and Rita Hayworth among them. Four panels at 50 x 100 cm each, hand-stretched and matched to the tone and colour already in the house.

The reference images were generated with a neural network I built for the job, then each piece was painted by hand at scale, using the paint and the surface to add variation a screen can't produce. Nothing is printed, and nothing is a straight copy of the reference.

Four smaller pieces were then made bespoke for their home cinema room, at 15 x 15 inches each.

Their house is, at this point, largely full of my work.

“A smiley face emoji, but make it mean something”

Painted over a collage of feminist icons and magazine cuttings, for a female trauma therapist. The joke only works because the paint covers it and the cut paper underneath does the arguing.

“This photo of The Witcher, in a colour scheme that suits my room”

A single painted piece, with the palette built to sit in a particular room rather than to match the source photograph.

Painting of a long-haired blond man holding a sword, in a cool blue and turquoise palette
